TACTILE URBAN DESIGN + BARTLETT LOBBY INSTALLATION 2nd September

We are presenting 3 sites in each of which we got interested in discontinuities. Our basis is critical-experimental approach. Our idea is to stimulate those areas and convert the voids into spines of growth. The output of our research was determining urban design components which we see as guidelines for the process of design. Our ultimate aim is to reach to design solutions through the process of “tactile urban design”.

We analyze forces of the context, which we supplement with urban design components that are not fixed elements but models for a process, though they contain the ability to project a series of spaces and surfaces flexible to evolve while at the same time being specific enough to give a direction for future growth.

We prove the efficiency of working within the guidelines identified by all the design components to achieve a complex urban system capable of stimulating spines for growth out of the discontinuous areas.

WE SUPPORT THE APPROACH TO URBAN DESIGN THAT FOCUSES ON HOW AND WHY THE LINES ARE DRAWN, HOW THEY GROW OUT OF THE CONTEXT, HOW THEY CORRELATE TO REACH THE LEVEL THAT WILL BE EFFICIENT ENOUGH TO ACT AS A COMPLEX SYSTEM.

WE OPPOSE TO SUPERFICIALLY IMPOSING PROGRAMS AS WE BELIEVE THAT THE DRAWING ITSELF SHUOLD REVIEAL THEM.

WHAT IS DIFFERENT IN OUR METHOD IS THE WAY WE APPROACH URBAN DESIGN AS A PROCESS ITSELF.

ONLY WHEN ALL LINES THAT ARE DERIVED FROM THE CONTEXT REACH COMPLEXITY IT IS TIME TO TRANSLATE THEM INTO SPACES.

East Greenwich March
Cities are products of time which embodied in the physical world, and the survival of identities conveys a sense of security and continuity. “east Greenwich marsh” is a vision of the peninsula that presents a spontaneously growing pattern in an order that includes complementarity between all layers added and the existing old layers, bringing back the value of the waterfront by regenerating the former riverside walk which highlights few identity elements left from the past, reminding us of the immersed industrial heritage and life behind the shadows of giant gasworks. The project is a continuation of shots of live communities, or building barges with kids playing on the riverside or in the streets; it brings back life to communities that now seem to be gone forever. It also includes linking the area socially and culturally, taking the meanings of the past and adding the meanings of “now” with appreciation to the achievements of its forerunners. It is a promise that future will save “east Greenwich marsh’s” present.

Tutorial Friday 2009-08-14

This week group tutorials with you giving a short presentation about the presentation.
Bring along two works to present, one is THE piece of your project and the second one is a sketch of your planned presentation.

The idea is that you will be taking about the presentation you will be giving for the final crit. So put together all the aspects of your project to talk about them.
For this you will also need to bring one layout sketch(small version of the presentation including the content) or mockup drawing. Be prepared to talk about sequence, layout, font, colours, materials, ...

For the project it self you bring along one drawing, rendering or model that you believe summarizes/represents your project. You will be also talking about this.

We will be on the third floor in room 336.

Times:
10h00 - 13h00 Zahra, Muna, Sunny, Day, Daria

14h00 - 17h00 Sura, Stevi, Paul, Pritpal

Please come on time at the beginning of the session with respect for the others of the group. If there is a problem with the times find someone to swap with.

We discussed last week what the individual focus of this weeks tutorial will be. Please stick to it and bring along the required work. Broadly this is a layout for the final physical presentation and a story board for the oral presentation. Also give some thought how you plan the finish (not only layout, but also paper, frame, colours, material...) of your final drawings and models will be.
