Inside Out: Colages

Here are collages I have been working on to illustrate ]InsideOut[ as a proposal. Collage 1 shows Chiltern Street transformed from a retail parade to a car free residential area. Collage 2 shows a street off Marylbone which is transformed with the reinstatment of underground river and connection to existing canal. This creates a layered transport network which can service the needs of residents. I am currently working on additional collages to illustrate different aspects of the proposal and also a SWOT analysis.

  2. These are nice visuals. They definitely show a change in usage. I very much like how you activate the 3rd dimension by adding some additional modes of transport. I am glad you started off with completely changing the street into a park landscape and away from the road image. At the moment the "streets"/spaces look rather empty, is it half term and all the families are on holiday, or do people stay indoors to do the online shopping on their computers? At least it is a bright day. Can you think of some more activities that might happen in this new spaces apart from leisure and park feeling? Maybe you could talk about a new hierarchy and design those space much more intimate so that some streets or street section almost become like courtyards and semi private. The new public-private relations ship could be an interesting topic to think about.
The images also render quite well the problem you are facing with the new usage of the streets, that have become landscapes. I am still wondering whether it is possible to transform those canyons into something new if you try to work with the space rather than the surface. Maybe transformation of the facade or extensions to the buildings?
